Note: This strip marked the first appearance of James the Worm! When considering what I would like to create for a new character, I start with making sure the character adds something new to the comedic dynamic. James’ laid-back nature renders him immune to Sparky’s antics, contrary to the exasperated Rebekah. I was also thought it would be funny if one of Sparky’s friends was an earthworm, one of the natural prey of real-life eagles. Ultimately, I think James was a welcome addition to the cast early in the comic’s run.

James: “Whazzup, Sparko?”
[Nod nod, from James]

Sparky: “Did you watch the football game last night?”
James: “Nah. I, like, don’t get cable in my burrow, man…”
Panel 3: Sparky looks uneasy, sweating, with shiver lines beside his head. A blue question mark floats over James.
Sparky: “It was fun, but I saw something that REALLY creeped me out…”
Panel 4: Sparky is still shivering and sweating, even more upset.
Sparky: “Someone was wearing this strange suit! It looked like… ME!”
Sparky: “But WHY?!” [in a speech bubble dripping ominously]
[Nod nod, from James]
Panel 5: Sparky looks down at James, calmer.
James: “Imitation is, like, the greatest form of flattery, man…”

James: “Right on, Bird-man… Right on…”
